Tying Tops 2024, Christmas tree shearing started a little early for me this year.
At East Fork Christmas Tree Farm we usually start shearing in the middle of July. We want to be done by that time this year so we have started tying the tops. All I need is some bamboo sticks, twist tie wire and some hand pruners. Today I will show you the way I am working the trees but also some of the trees I was indecisive on and ask for your input. #christmastreefarm @FlanaganHomestead

Bringing home the sheep is easier when the boys come home to help!
Просмотров 857 часов назад
On the Flanagan Homestead we have a small herd of sheep that need to be moved from time to time. We converted my dump trailer into a livestock hauler. The biggest problem was we did not have proper ramps for loading and getting the sheep in proved very difficult. To get them home the slope of the hill was going to make it even harder. The best way to make it work was to have my adult sons help ...

The next step in building my hobbit house is building the forms for the foundation. I will be doing a monopour, which means I will be pouring the foundation, footings and slab all at once. The slab itself will only be 4 inches thick. The shire is coming along! We will be renting space on hipcamp.com #hobbithouse #hobbithome @FlanaganHomestead

Transline herbicide safe over trees?
Просмотров 203День назад
I used Transline herbicide which is very directed at thistle. I used transline instead of crossbow or other 2-4D products because I wanted to spray over the top of young growing Christmas trees. The results in the pasture and on the Christmas trees was great. Dead thistle, no negative affect on our Nordmann fir Christmas trees. #transline @FlanaganHomestead

Просмотров 207Месяц назад

Cattle panels, hog panels or any other fence panel can easily be loaded into the bed of your pickup. Even the ones that are 16 feet long. This can be done by simply bending them over and strapping the top panel in. Cattle panels can be used in variety of ways on your farm. How many sheep can you put on an acre of pasture?

Our dorper sheep are eating down the pasture faster than it can grow. We are in a good grass growing region. It is also a good time of year for growth yet the grass is real short. I have heard recommendations up to 12 sheep per acre. This has proven to be way too many. Hi, doing the same thing here in Finland. I dont tie all trees, only those that have bird damage or theres no leader at all. I think that the best situation is when there is 2 or more leaders. If theres a bird damage for one you have still some leader(s) left to grow and i select best one when pruning later summer. I use wooden sticks and few inch long copper electric cables (1,5mm2). Probably 8 years that I have had chickens and the hens love to sleep and crap in the nesting boxes, and it dawned on me the other day that it might be because the laying boxes are higher than the roosts, so I'm thinking of putting my nesting boxes closer to the ground, lower than the roosts. Seeing your setup and I think that's why, because you have that perch sticking out so they can go inside and lay eggs and it's obvious that they are sleeping and crapping on that perch. Has anyone else came to that conclusion or is it something obvious that I am just now realizing? That pallet on the floor in the goat's pen is begging for rats and snakes to make their nests underneath. I wouldn't put a framed wood floor for goats or chickens because rotting is inevitable. My goats lay happily on the ground they built up with hay and their own poop. I did find some really good tips in this video though. I like what you did with the compost pile. For years I've been throwing food scraps in the chicken coop, but lately they don't seem to eat it and it brings in a ton of flies, so offering them to the goats and chickens sounds like a good idea.

I planted them about a month ago and I’m not seeing any signs of life yet. I’ve fertaliized them I keep them well watered. I just got a tester two days ago and my soils ph is 7.0 so I’m thinking maybe that’s the main reason so I got some acidifier but since that will take some time to change the ph I’m gonna supplement with dilute white vinaigrette when I water. Any advice would be great. I’ve always grown my own veggies but I haven’t had any experience with fruits yet so I have a lot to learn when it comes to that. Thank you

You are correct in that your soil needs to be more acidic and need to take measures to rectify that. Even so if the plant was healthy when purchased there should be some bud opening by now and growth. I hope you were sold viable plants. Moisture in the soil is good but they don't want to be too damp for an extended period of time.
